Office Party Naked

Naked for a Cause is actually a charity that makes use of attractively naked athletes to raise money. Specifically, they publish calendars and other things bearing stylish and sexy photographs of Australian rugby and football players and give the proceeds to the McGrath Foundation to fund breast cancer nurses in the rural parts of that country.

A worthy cause, no doubt, but not one I'm above making use of for a bit of humour.

I don't mean to be USA-centric here, but to take the cause of breast cancer treatment and - better yet! - diagnosis seriously, here are some statistics, all dating from 2004, the latest year for published stats from the CDC.

That year roughly 187,000 women and 1800 men were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 41,000 women and 360 men died. The most fundamental reason for survival is early detection, so having regular exams is vital.

For the record, the 2004 numbers are largely the same for prostate cancer: 189,000 men diagnosed with it, and 29,000 dead. There were 2,000 more cases of prostate cancer than breast cancer, but less public awareness and less fund-raising. Who will be the Susan G. Komen of prostate cancer?

HAPPY BOXING DAY!

Yeah, I know. "Boxing Day" actually has nothing to do with men in baggy shorts pummeling each other senseless. I just used it as an excuse to put this photo up because I feel like I've had too few photographs here of late.

Boxing Day is, in actuality, a public holiday (as opposed to a religious holiday) celebrated in Great Britain and many of its commonwealths and territories such as Canada, Australia, etc. It dates back to the Middle Ages when serfs would gather and collect from their lord seeds, grain, food and tools for the following year, an obligation under the feudal system. Over time, it evolved into a a day where servants and underlings would receive a box containing coins as a year-end gift, which is the probable origin of the annual Christmas bonus many people receive.

A more down-to-Earth explanation is that it began in the practice of giving servants the day after Christmas off since they would have had to work on Christmas itself.

Crosby and Sinatra, "White Christmas"
Enya, "Christmas Secrets"
Josh Groban, "O Holy Night"
Barbra Streisand, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

Che Bello

Italian model Emanuel Fiore. He has a sweet face, with those big chocolate brown eyes that make him look like a very pretty boy. But there's not much that's boyish about the body under those clothes.

To Hell with Where the Flowers Went

Several random guys this time, actually, as well as a few not-so-random guys that you'll probably recognize. Here are some Cowboys for Christmas. Don't break them right away, or you won't have anything to play with.

Yeah, I know these guys are mostly models and actors only pretending to be cowboys, but who cares? We're just looking at them. We're not asking them to drive the herd up to Wichita. And there are at least two real rodeo cowboys and one real farmer among them. You can guess which they are, if you want.

Drop and Give Me 40 Winks

Cute picture, n'est pas?

It reminds me of an old question of mine though: if our culture were more accepting of simple man-to-man affection without labeling it "gay," would we have so many gays? I don't want to get into the whole "what makes people homosexual" argument, but I do know of many people who have been caused a lot of pain and who made many bad decisions simply because they didn't fit into the narrow definition of "real man" that they grew up with.

Perhaps if that definition broadened up a bit, we wouldn't have so many people running into some extreme behaviours. Rather like the way our culture has puritanical attitudes about alcohol AND a enormous number of people who go out with a goal of getting drunk.

This photo also makes me wonder what Lucky Pierre is listening to.

No relation

My thinking's a bit confused today, a situation no doubt created by various stresses working on me like a throng of illegal immigrants grooming a rich white man's lawn.

But a couple of days ago I remembered other times when I was plagued into inactivity by a host of vague worries and random thoughts, and I remembered also how much help I got from a technique called rational emotive therapy, one of the brain children of Dr. Albert Ellis.

I'm gonna oversimplify this, but it is a pretty simple idea. Basically it requires writing down what you're thinking and examining it for irrationality. The writing-down takes vague worries and random thoughts and makes them concrete on paper, turns them into something real enough to examine rather than just intangible distractions, a swarm of gnats around your mind, as it were. And usually writing down worries and fears (or telling them to a friend or putting them into a prayer etc.) is enough to make them seem less worrying or frightening.

The examination for irrational thoughts is far more complicated than I want to talk about here, but it's sometimes useful.

And, by the way, if you are one of those people who have never been so worried about your own life that you felt depressed or too indecisive to know what to do, consider yourself lucky.
