Naked for a Cause is actually a charity that makes use of attractively naked athletes to raise money. Specifically, they publish calendars and other things bearing stylish and sexy photographs of Australian rugby and football players and give the proceeds to the McGrath Foundation to fund breast cancer nurses in the rural parts of that country.
A worthy cause, no doubt, but not one I'm above making use of for a bit of humour.
I don't mean to be USA-centric here, but to take the cause of breast cancer treatment and - better yet! - diagnosis seriously, here are some statistics, all dating from 2004, the latest year for published stats from the CDC.
That year roughly 187,000 women and 1800 men were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 41,000 women and 360 men died. The most fundamental reason for survival is early detection, so having regular exams is vital.
For the record, the 2004 numbers are largely the same for prostate cancer: 189,000 men diagnosed with it, and 29,000 dead. There were 2,000 more cases of prostate cancer than breast cancer, but less public awareness and less fund-raising. Who will be the Susan G. Komen of prostate cancer?
