Pigskin Parable

A Political Parable in Two Parts

Imagine that you own a professional football team, and you're faced with hiring a new coach. Someone who take good care of your guys and bring home the victories that you need to win the loyalty of the fans and put butts in the seats.

Among the applicants is one guy with a few years experience at playing the game and some experience coaching but not at the professional level. He knows the game, and all of his references talk about his dedication to the job: the long hours he put in, his determination to alway be there ready to work when called upon, the sacrifices he made to his personal life and his own health even. Even when he was battered and broken in a game, he never gave up, never turned his back on the game.

He has tons of what sports writers call "heart" even if he has limited coaching experience.

There is absolutely no doubt about his dedication, but my question to you is this: is dedication alone enough to make him right for the job?

past dedication is not enough. it may not even be relevant.
can he inspire the team to work as one unit to achieve a common goal?
